BLOOD TESTS

FULL BLOOD COUNT

A Full Blood Count (FBC) is an extremely common blood test.  It provides detailed information about an individual's overall health by measuring various components of the blood.

Why Get An FBC Blood Test?

A person might require an FBC if they are showing signs of fatigue and weakness, experiencing frequent infections, or noticing unexplained bruises or bleeding.

It can also be used to help monitor medical conditions and to evaluate general health before surgery or major treatments.

Understanding FBC Results

The doctor will explain what the FBC results mean. Abnormalities in the results do not always indicate a serious condition, but further tests might be needed to determine the cause. Early detection through a Full Blood Count test can result in prompt treatment and improved outcomes for various health conditions.

Core Blood Markers

Red Blood Cells (RBCs) are essential for transporting oxygen throughout the body. Abnormal levels can signal conditions like anaemia or dehydration. White Blood Cells (WBCs) are crucial for defending the body against illnesses. Variations in their counts may suggest infection, inflammation, or leukaemia.

Haemoglobin (Hb) is the protein that carries oxygen in RBCs. Low haemoglobin levels might point to anaemia or lung issues, while elevated levels could indicate other health problems.

Platelets are essential for blood coagulation, and counts outside the normal range may point to bleeding disorders or malfunction of the bone marrow. Hematocrit (HCT) measures the percentage of RBCs in the blood, aiding clinicians in diagnosing conditions like anaemia and dehydration.

Pre-Test Information

Hormone diagnostic tests must be taken between 07:00 – 11:00 am. You must not have eaten food or drank caffeine/sugar/carbohydrate-containing drinks in the last 6 hours.

Water is fine, and Healand recommends that you stay hydrated for 48 hours before your blood test is taken. If you regularly consume pre-workout drinks, Healand advises you to cease consuming these 7 days before your blood test. If you have had a Prostate Assessment via Digital Rectal Examination (DRE) in the last 7 days or an active Urinary Tract Infection in the same period, Healand advises you to schedule any diagnostic testing for 7 days after the examination/last symptoms.

Healand advises you refrain from exertion (heavy exercise/sexual intercourse, etc) in the preceding 48 hours as this can skew results.

Patients must be over the age of 18
