Liver Function Test

A Liver Function Test evaluates substances produced by the liver to assess its health. If you have a family history of liver disease or are struggling with alcohol use disorder, it is crucial to prioritise scheduling regular Liver Function Tests to help monitor your liver health effectively.

Why Is A Liver Function Blood Test Essential?

A Liver Function Test can help determine whether your liver is healthy or if there is damage or disease present. It typically screens for liver infections, such as hepatitis and Fatty Liver Disease, and also helps assess the severity of the liver disease, the effectiveness of treatment, and the progression of the disease.

Understanding Your LFT Results

Various liver enzymes and proteins are measured in your LFT test. Normal levels usually indicate that your liver is functioning properly. Elevated levels may suggest liver inflammation, damage, or disease. The specific enzyme or protein levels that are elevated can help pinpoint the underlying issue.

Core Blood Markers

The most common blood markers in a Liver Function Test include Alanine Aminotransferase (ALT), where elevated levels often indicate liver damage or inflammation; Aspartate Aminotransferase (AST), which can indicate liver damage when elevated, though high levels may also arise from heart or muscle damage; Alkaline Phosphatase (ALP), with increased levels suggesting bile duct obstruction, liver disease, or bone disorders; Total Bilirubin, where elevated levels can indicate liver dysfunction, bile duct obstruction, or hemolysis (the breakdown of red blood cells); and Albumin, where low levels can indicate liver disease.

What Is Included?

A Liver Function Test Includes, But Is Not Limited To:

  • Alanine Aminotransferase (ALT)

  • Aspartate Aminotransferase (AST)

  • Alkaline Phosphatase (ALP)

  • Total Bilirubin

  • Albumin

  • Gamma GT

FAQs

What is a Liver Function Test?

In short, a Liver Function Test (also known as an LFT) is a simple blood test that helps assess the health of your liver. It does this by measuring the levels of various enzymes, proteins, and substances produced or processed by your liver, and is an incredibly important test for diagnosing liver diseases and monitoring existing liver conditions.

What conditions can an LFT help diagnose?

An LFT can help diagnose liver diseases such as hepatitis, Fatty Liver Disease, cirrhosis, and even liver cancer.

Can certain medications affect Liver Function Test results?

Yes, certain medications can impact your liver enzyme levels and alter your LFT results. This is because some medications and supplements are broken down (metabolised) by your liver. That is why it is very important to tell your doctor which medications you are taking.

Can certain lifestyle changes help improve liver function?

Most definitely. Certain lifestyle changes can significantly enhance your liver function and overall health. These include, but are not limited to, maintaining a healthy, balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins is essential. Of course, getting regular exercise, avoiding excessive alcohol consumption, and maintaining a healthy weight are just as important.

Is a Liver Function Test and a Liver Biopsy the same?

No, a Liver Function Test and a Liver Biopsy are not the same. A Liver Function Test is a blood test that assesses your liver function, and a Liver Biopsy involves taking a tissue sample from your liver to evaluate its condition.
