Oestradiol Blood Test
An oestradiol test is commonly used to check fertility, menopause, menstrual issues, and how well hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is working.

The Role Of Oestradiol In Your Body
Oestradiol (medically referred to as E2) is a hormone and the primary form of oestrogen. It plays an incredibly important role in your reproductive health, bone strength, and overall well-being. It is also essential for the development and maintenance of your female reproductive tissues.
These include your uterus, fallopian tubes, and vaginal lining. On top of that, it supports collagen production and contributes to the health of your sebaceous glands too.
What Can An Imbalance Mean?
Abnormal oestradiol levels can lead to irregular menstrual cycles, infertility, low sex drive, and menopausal symptoms. It may also be linked to hormone-related conditions like PCOS, endometriosis, and ovarian cysts, as well as ovarian, adrenal, or testicular tumours, and bone health issues like osteoporosis.
High oestradiol levels can increase the risk of bleeding problems, thickening of the uterine lining, uterine and breast cancer, and acne.

When To Consider This Test
If you are experiencing symptoms like mood swings, fatigue, acne, hot flashes, night sweats, or changes in your skin and hair, an oestradiol blood test may be recommended.
It can also be incredibly helpful if you are dealing with irregular periods, gynecomastia (enlarged male breast tissue), erectile dysfunction, weight gain, or vaginal dryness.
An oestradiol test can help monitor the effectiveness of hormone replacement therapy (HRT). It can also track progress during gender-affirming hormone therapy and assess individuals with a history of hormone-sensitive cancers. It is also useful for those undergoing fertility treatments or trying to conceive.
Core Blood Markers
Your blood sample is analysed in a laboratory to determine your current oestradiol (E2) levels. These levels are measured in picomoles per litre (pmol/L).

FAQs
How does oestradiol differ from other forms of oestrogen?
Can men have their oestradiol levels tested?
Men can most definitely get an oestradiol blood test. In fact, it is often recommended if they show symptoms of hormonal imbalance, such as reduced muscle mass, gynecomastia (enlarged breast tissue), or infertility. Abnormal oestradiol levels in men are also associated with liver disease, obesity, or tumours affecting hormone production.
What does an oestradiol blood test show?
It is important to note that oestradiol levels vary based on age, sex, and health. Normal levels for pre-menopausal women typically range from 30 to 400 pg/mL (depending on the phase of the menstrual cycle). For post-menopausal women it’s less than 30 pg/mL, and for men it’s between 10 and 50 pg/mL. High oestradiol levels can indicate conditions like ovarian cysts, hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid), or hormone-sensitive cancers (such as breast or ovarian cancer). Low levels may suggest menopause, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), or ovarian insufficiency.
Can oestradiol levels fluctuate during my menstrual cycle?
Your oestradiol levels most definitely change throughout your menstrual cycle. They increase during the peak of ovulation and then decrease after ovulation (if pregnancy does not occur). Thus, the timing is critical when taking this blood test to ensure your results are relevant to your symptoms or medical condition.
How is an oestradiol blood test used in fertility treatments?
It checks how your ovaries are responding during treatments like in vitro fertilisation (IVF). This test also ensures your hormone levels are just right for optimal egg development and provides important information for adjusting medication or timing treatments.
