Pregnancy Blood Test

If you have recently discovered you are pregnant, a pregnancy blood test is strongly recommended. It helps confirm and monitor your pregnancy.

Pregnancy Blood Test (HCG Test)

A pregnancy test is also known as an hCG test. hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) is a hormone produced by the placenta during pregnancy and can be detected in your blood as early as 6 to 8 days after fertilisation.

An hCG blood test is extremely accurate and can detect lower levels of hCG than urine tests. Thus it is used to confirm your pregnancy, estimate how far along the pregnancy is, as well as monitor it.

Understanding Your HCG Results

A positive result means that hCG is present in your blood, confirming pregnancy. The level of hCG increases rapidly in the first few weeks, indicating that the pregnancy is progressing.

Levels are highest during the first trimester, then decline. If they start to decline before then, it could indicate a miscarriage. A negative result means no detectable hCG hormone was found.

Pregnancy Blood Test Vs. Urine Test

A blood test is the preferred method for doctors to confirm pregnancy. This is because it not only detects the presence of hCG but also measures its levels. These levels can help identify abnormal pregnancies, such as ectopic pregnancies, molar pregnancies, and potential miscarriages.

A blood test can also detect a chemical pregnancy, which is an early miscarriage that occurs before the 5th week of pregnancy. Additionally, it can confirm multiple pregnancies, such as twins. Blood tests can detect pregnancy earlier than urine tests.

Core Blood Markers

A pregnancy blood test looks for the presence of hCG in your blood and measures its levels to verify and track your pregnancy.

FAQs

Can a pregnancy test detect a miscarriage?

Since a pregnancy test measures both the qualitative and quantitative hCG in your blood, it can detect a miscarriage and ectopic pregnancy. If hCG levels start to drop, it could indicate a pregnancy loss.

Is a pregnancy test safe?

Blood tests are low-risk. You can expect to feel mild pain or bruising where the needle is inserted into your arm. However, since a very small and standard amount of blood is taken, the test is generally deemed safe for mother and baby.

What happens if my test comes back positive?

If your test is positive, it is extremely important to book a follow-up appointment to check that your hCG levels are increasing the way they should. Your follow-up appointment may also include additional tests, like an ultrasound or STD screening. Use the opportunity to talk to your doctor about prenatal care, lifestyle changes, and any other questions you may have about your pregnancy.

How early can a blood test detect pregnancy?

A blood test can detect the hCG hormone as early as 6 to 8 days after conception. Conception usually occurs 6 to 12 days after ovulation. If you think you are pregnant but get a negative result, wait a few days and try the test again.

Can a pregnancy blood test be used to detect multiple pregnancies?

Of course. Unlike a urine test, a blood test can help detect multiple pregnancies like twins or triplets. In a typical pregnancy, hCG levels rise steadily. In cases of multiples, the levels are usually higher sooner. A pregnancy cannot confirm the exact amount of babies through. You will need an ultrasound to confirm the diagnosis.
