BLOOD TESTS
PROSTATE SPECIFIC ANTIGEN TEST (PSA)
A Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) blood test is highly recommended for anyone who has a prostate gland. Because a Prostate Specific Antigen test measures the level of PSA (a protein produced by both cancerous and noncancerous tissue in the prostate) in a blood sample to screen for prostate cancer.
Why Is A PSA Blood Test Important?
Prostate cancer is one of the most common types of cancer among men in the world. For example, in 2018, 1,276,106 new cases of prostate cancer were reported among men worldwide. In the UK alone, it is projected that a total of about 52,000 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer annually. Therefore, we can all agree, getting scheduling a regular PSA test is absolutely invaluable.
Understanding Your PSA Results
A simple blood sample is taken from a vein, usually from your arm, and sent to a laboratory for analysis. The laboratory measures the amount of PSA in your blood, which is reported in nanograms per millilitre (ng/mL). Elevated PSA levels can be caused by factors other than cancer, such as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), which is an enlarged prostate, or prostatitis, which is inflammation of the prostate. PSA levels significantly higher than 10 ng/mL could suggest a higher likelihood of prostate cancer, though further tests are necessary to confirm the diagnosis.
Core Blood Markers
The significant biomarker that one would look for in the PSA test is the protein PSA. High PSA levels suggest prostate conditions such as benign prostate disorders, infections, and prostate cancer. The PSA test, however, cannot pinpoint cancer, and one would require other tests to reach a suitable diagnosis.

Pre-Test Information
If you have had a recent prostate exam (digital rectal exam), biopsy, or surgery, it is recommended to wait a few weeks before having the PSA test.
Certain medications, such as finasteride (Propecia, Proscar) or dutasteride (Avodart), can lower PSA levels, so it is important to inform your healthcare provider about any medications you are taking.
Additionally, intense physical activity, especially vigorous cycling, can cause temporary increases in PSA levels, so it’s advised to avoid these activities before the test.
Patients must be over the age of 18
