An 82-year-old lady with severe pain caused by scoliosis was able to climb to the top of the Leaning Tower of Pisa in Italy after medical treatments from Healand Clinic in Leicester.
Carole Thompson, from Wigston, had been diagnosed with scoliosis several years ago and the condition had been worsening as she grew older.
Her back had been getting so painful that she was having to stop and rest several times on the short, mile-long walk from her home in Little Hill to Wigston Town Centre.
Despite taking over-the-counter painkillers, without a spinal operation, she was faced with limited options.
With a trip to the Mediterranean approaching, she turned to Healand Clinic after learning about the innovative treatments on offer, to see if there was anything they could do to alleviate the pain, so that she could enjoy her holiday.
After a free consultation with Medical Director, Dr Omar Babar MBChB, PG Cert, FRCEM, Carole was offered a course of Ozone infusions designed to control inflammation, relieve symptoms, slow down joint damage, and improve quality of life.
Carole received four infusions which involved Dr Babar carefully injecting Ozone into the most painful areas of her spine. By the end of the course of treatment only a few weeks later, Carole’s pain had reduced dramatically and mobility had improved considerably.
Carole said, “The difference the Ozone made to me was incredible.
"Before, I was struggling to walk even into Wigston in one go. But after the treatment, I went on holiday last October with my daughter and I was able to move around with so much less pain in my back.
“On the day we went to Pisa, we covered over 19,300 steps, equating to over eight miles!
"And, I was actually able to climb the 294 stairs right up to the top of the tower.
"I was so pleased that I did, as the views were incredible.
"It would have been such a shame to go all that way and not have been able to get to the top.
“The Ozone infusions made a massive difference to the pain I was experiencing in my back, so from my perspective it was definitely worth doing.
"I certainly wouldn’t have been able to walk that far or go up to the top of the Leaning Tower of Pisa without having the treatment at Healand.”
Dr Babar added, “For patients like Carole, depending on the personal circumstances, we can offer a number of different treatments – some of these aren’t readily available on the NHS – such as the Ozone infusions and PRP [Platelet Rich Plasma] injections.
"We can also administer more mainstream treatments that are NHS accessible, but sometimes there are long waiting lists to access the medication. At Healand, we can provide a more immediate service.
“We offer free consultations where we discuss the patient’s issues and decide on an individual pain management plan. Every person is different, so the treatments are all tailored to the individual.
“We are a CQC registered clinic and we can offer a wide range of clinical care delivered by experienced, trusted professionals. We would be delighted to speak to anyone about how we can be a part of their transformative healthcare journey.”
